A Little Town With a Big Heart!

by Patricia Fua

McGill Nevada has a rich history.  Set in
the beautiful Steptoe Valley, McGill
Nevada is truly an oasis.

The history of McGill is still being made,
and this weekend a group of dedicated
residents came out to do their part to
revitalize one of the jewels of their town,
the McGill Theater.

In this time where theaters sit unused in
our area, the owner of the McGill Theater,
Aaron Johnson and his mother Nancy are
anxious to breathe life back into this
community gathering place.

Although the history of the old theater is
sketchy, the future is looking quite
encouraging. Besides the recalled
memories spoken by McGill residents,
there is very little written history or
remaining artifacts to tell us the story of
its origin.

People arrive early, anxious to get to work on the restoration of the
McGill Theater. Many even drove in from out of town to be a part of this
project.
The original stage is still quite impressive.
Over the years after being
closed down the theater went
through several owners, and
much of the history of the
past to be found in playbills,
posters, pictures and records
was either destroyed without
reverence, or taken away as
souvenirs.

There is however much to be
enjoyed in the original art
deco style of the interior, and
there is still a short row of
seats! The projection room
presides masterfully over all,
but the roof is in dire need of
becoming the first major
project.
Volunteers on this Saturday morning in May were in
high spirits thinking of all the possible future uses of
the McGill Theater, and Nancy Johnson was optimistic
with a plan to raise money through the sale of
beautiful tiles to be placed at the entrance to the
theater.

of restoration you can contact Nancy Johnson in

Over the years a leaking roof has caused
some interior damage to what is otherwise a
sound structure.
